New 3v3 Football Format Announced By The FA

The FA have recently provided an update on the Future of Youth Football in England based on a partnership with Liverpool John Moores University, which saw them study over 400 grassroots games at U6-U14 level to develop a better understanding of different playing formats for younger players.

The comprehensive two-year study looked at the technical and physical benefits and drawbacks of different team playing numbers for youth players across the country. As a result of these findings, from the start of the 2026-27 season, The FA are planning to introduce a new format, 3v3 football for all Under 7 activity.

The 3v3 format for the youngest players in the game is being implemented to increase their time with the ball and time on the pitch. The initiative aims to improve technical skills and keep youth football engaging and active. The FA has conducted extensive research and consultation with stakeholders to ensure the changes align with the needs of grassroots football.

This dynamic new format maximizes time with the ball and enhances player development, making it the perfect way to boost young players’ skills.

Whether your team is just starting out or looking to take their game to the next level, 3v3 games offer more touches, more fun, and faster-paced action for everyone on the pitch. And with the FA’s commitment to improving youth football, there’s never been a better time to try it out.
